The 2024 Capital of Christmas
04 December 2024
You may know the traditional Christmas cities in Central Europe, such as Vienna or Dresden, but there's a city in Czechia that you should also consider visiting this Christmas – Brno. The European Capital of Christmas and European City of Christmas awards have been given out since 2017 under the auspices of the European Parliament. This year Brno holds the European Capital of Christmas title, in the category of cities with over 100,000 inhabitants.

The international jury appreciated that it was decorated with light installations in the form of a cozy winter sweater. The jury also liked that the Christmas markets reflected Czech traditions and values because many local artists, vendors, craftsmen and bearers of Czech folk traditions sell their products there. The award is a boost for Brno as the second largest city in the Czech Republic as it has always held a rivalry with Prague. The capital won't be pleased to discover that it got beaten in this one. |
Welcome to The European Correspondent
Europe lacks true European media: in Germany alone, there are more media devoted exclusively to football than news outlets specialising on Europe. The established players mainly focus on Brussels and European institutions. The European Correspondent aims to change that. We cover the whole of Europe and write for a community of citizens who want to look beyond their own national borders. Without European journalism, there is no European civil society.
