Pitch to The European Correspondent

Do you have a story that Europeans should be talking about?

At The European Correspondent, we’re looking for original, timely, and well-argued pitches from freelance journalists across the continent. If you’ve got a compelling idea that speaks to citizens from Lisbon to Lviv, we want to hear from you.

But before you pitch, please take a moment to read through the information below. It’ll save you and us time, and help you craft a stronger proposal.

What we’re looking for: reader-first journalism

We publish journalism that puts Europe’s citizens at the centre. Our journalism connects the dots between countries, communities, and policies, and explains how they affect people’s lives.

That’s why we ask you to think carefully about the audience before you pitch. Your story idea should answer questions like:

  • Why should someone in another country care?

  • How does this story connect to broader European trends?

We currently reach over curious and critical 70,000 readers across Europe. All our stories should be worth the time they’ll spend reading them.

Who can pitch

At the moment, we only accept pitches from freelance journalists who are registered within the European Union (this includes those with a VAT number, freelance registration, or equivalent), with the exception of freelancers registered in EU enlargement countries.

We welcome pitches from experienced correspondents and emerging voices alike. You don’t need to have written for major outlets, but you do need a clear idea, a strong angle, and the reporting and language skills to deliver it.

How to pitch

All pitches must be submitted through our commissioning platform, Vika. We use Vika to make our process more transparent and manageable, and it helps us keep track of submissions and makes sure no pitch gets lost in an inbox.

We do not accept pitches by email, social media, or personal channels. This keeps the process fair for everyone.

What we pay

We pay rates that vary depending on your living location. Because we’re a Europe-wide publication, we apply a location-sensitive rate card to account for differences in living costs and reporting expenses across the EU.

Here’s what determines your rate:

  • Your country of residence

  • The length and complexity of the article

We’ll always be transparent about rates up front if we accept your pitch.

When we pay

We pay on publication, via invoice. Once your article goes live, we’ll send you the payment instructions and request your invoice.

A few final tips

  • Keep it short and sharp. A strong pitch makes your story idea immediately clear.

  • If you’ve already done interviews or have unique access, let us know.

  • Feel free to mention if the pitch is time-sensitive (and why).
