Free Europe saved – for now
31 March 2025
Good news! Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) will not shut down as many feared after the US administration announced it would cut funding, which the organisation relies on. The radical decision caused outrage within the newsroom and received criticism from European leaders who called it a massive gift to the enemies of democracy.
RFE/RL defended itself through legal channels, making its case in an US district court – and won. The funding is now ensured again, at least till the end of this year.
![]() | Eli Volencová RFE/RL reaches over 50 million people in 23 countries with limited press freedom. It is a crucial source of information for those exposed to state propaganda and censorship. In the days of uncertainty, the EU started to work on plans to keep RFE/RL alive. Now, the help is not urgent anymore. But Czech foreign minister Jan Lipavský, who initiated the debate about the future of RFE/RL, continues to push for a European solution that would ensure the radio's sustainable operation if the US decides to withdraw its funding again after all. |
Welcome to The European Correspondent
Europe lacks true European media: in Germany alone, there are more media devoted exclusively to football than news outlets specialising on Europe. The established players mainly focus on Brussels and European institutions. The European Correspondent aims to change that. We cover the whole of Europe and write for a community of citizens who want to look beyond their own national borders. Without European journalism, there is no European civil society.
