Your car registration may be digital in the future
01 May 2025
If you own a car, this will be relevant to you: The European Commission wants to overhaul the EU's road safety and vehicle registration rules. The most immediate impact for drivers is that vehicle registration documents would be digital in future. In place of paper certificates, mobile registration docs would be issued that could be stored in a digital wallet.
The Commission says that digitalisation will improve data management and lower costs. It also plans to tighten regulations for vehicle safety tests, including introducing technical inspections for electric vehicles, implementing new emissions testing, and recording odometer readings in national databases.

According to Eurostat, more than 20,000 people are killed in road accidents in Europe each year. The European Environment Agency estimates that more than 300,000 people die due to air pollution annually. |
Welcome to The European Correspondent
Europe lacks true European media: in Germany alone, there are more media devoted exclusively to football than news outlets specialising on Europe. The established players mainly focus on Brussels and European institutions. The European Correspondent aims to change that. We cover the whole of Europe and write for a community of citizens who want to look beyond their own national borders. Without European journalism, there is no European civil society.
