Snacking on an Xmas tree
10 January 2025
After the holiday season, Christmas trees in Latvia can be repurposed in creative and environmentally friendly ways. Instead of discarding them – which is a huge problem across Europe – Latvians are encouraged to donate their trees to deer parks, where they serve as both nutritious snacks and playful toys for the animals. This practice not only reduces waste but also provides health benefits for the deer, as the trees are rich in minerals and fibre. By giving Christmas trees a second life, Latvians contribute to sustainability efforts while supporting animal welfare in a simple yet impactful way.

Turns out, while conifers (the evergreen trees with needle-like leaves) aren’t a staple food for deer, they play an important role in their winter diet. In the wild, deer nibble on bark and twigs when berries and fresh grass are scarce. These natural snacks help boost their immune systems and maintain their energy levels. It is a small step toward sustainability and a big leap for giving back to nature. After all, the Christmas spirit can live on, even after the decorations come down. |
Welcome to The European Correspondent
Europe lacks true European media: in Germany alone, there are more media devoted exclusively to football than news outlets specialising on Europe. The established players mainly focus on Brussels and European institutions. The European Correspondent aims to change that. We cover the whole of Europe and write for a community of citizens who want to look beyond their own national borders. Without European journalism, there is no European civil society.
