Seven elections in three years and still without government
02 November 2024
Yes, you heard right – welcome to Bulgaria, where we just voted for the seventh time in three years. In this new favourite sport for the nation, eight new parties made it to the parliament while the ninth – Velichie, was left out, just 21 votes short of getting in. With its results standing at 3.9%, out of the minimum 4% that a party needs to make it to the parliament, the nationalist party blamed the Central Election Commission. Concerns over election fraud have also risen, after a woman from a southwestern town was caught by the mandatory cameras installed in all polling stations, filling blank ballots and voting multiple times for the winning GERB party and another one.

GERB is once again in the lead with no guarantees for a stable coalition, while centrists from We Continue The Change (PP-DB) came into second place with nearly half less of the votes. So it's not unthinkable that Bulgarians will head to the polls again sooner than later. |
Welcome to The European Correspondent
Europe lacks true European media: in Germany alone, there are more media devoted exclusively to football than news outlets specialising on Europe. The established players mainly focus on Brussels and European institutions. The European Correspondent aims to change that. We cover the whole of Europe and write for a community of citizens who want to look beyond their own national borders. Without European journalism, there is no European civil society.
