Reducing abortion rates with one simple trick

07 June 2024

New data from the Finnish public health institute (THL) reveals that teenage abortions have gone down by 66% since the turn of the century – from 2,144 in 2000 to 722 in 2023. THL attributes this decline to the efficiency of the Finnish healthcare system, the comprehensive sexual education offered by the Finnish curriculum, and, most importantly, the presence of readily available, free contraception for young people. That is, most regions of Finland provide free contraception for those under 25.

Welcome to The European Correspondent

Europe lacks true European media: in Germany alone, there are more media devoted exclusively to football than news outlets specialising on Europe. The established players mainly focus on Brussels and European institutions. The European Correspondent aims to change that. We cover the whole of Europe and write for a community of citizens who want to look beyond their own national borders. Without European journalism, there is no European civil society.
