Ready. Set. Nukes.
15 December 2024
Belarusian president Alexander Lukashenko has confirmed the deployment of "several dozen" Russian nuclear warheads in Belarus, alongside preparations to host Moscow's advanced hypersonic missiles. This escalation increases Belarus' role as a key ally in Russia's war against Ukraine. With its strategic location enabling strikes on western Ukraine, far from Russia's frontlines, Belarus could put key supply routes and civilian areas at risk.
![]() | Daria Matviichuk Russia and Belarus signed a treaty on security guarantees on 6 December 2024. The agreement follows Moscow's updated nuclear doctrine, extending its nuclear umbrella to Belarus amid rising tensions with the West. Lukashenko, who has ruled Belarus for over 30 years with Kremlin support, warned adversaries of an immediate response to any border violations. He previously allowed Russia to launch its 2022 full-scale invasion of Ukraine from Belarusian territory (something he denies) and to station tactical nuclear weapons there. Lukashenko also announced that the Oreshnik hypersonic missile, recently used by Russia for the first time in the Ukrainian city of Dnipro, will be deployed on Belarusian territory. |
Welcome to The European Correspondent
Europe lacks true European media: in Germany alone, there are more media devoted exclusively to football than news outlets specialising on Europe. The established players mainly focus on Brussels and European institutions. The European Correspondent aims to change that. We cover the whole of Europe and write for a community of citizens who want to look beyond their own national borders. Without European journalism, there is no European civil society.
