Cyclo cross for celebrities
09 January 2025
Cyclo cross is big in Belgium – so big that there's even a race just for celebrities. In the second Turbo Cross, organised by Belgian Youtuber Average Rob, on 30 December, celebrities from Belgium and the Netherlands competed in a fun race with wild obstacles. More than 400,000 people watched the race on TV and via webstream, and 20,000 fans gathered along the circuit.
Cyclo-cross, for those unfamiliar, is off-road cycle racing held in autumn and winter, featuring a lot of obstacles, and a lot of mud. The twist? Riders use thin-tyred road bikes, the kind many would use to go to work. The classic image of the sport is competitors struggling up muddy slopes with bikes on their shoulders.

With massive events, large media coverage, and the world's best riders, cyclocross is some kind of national sport in Flanders, almost as popular as football. Lots of beer and mud on a cold winter's day, what more do you need? |
Welcome to The European Correspondent
Europe lacks true European media: in Germany alone, there are more media devoted exclusively to football than news outlets specialising on Europe. The established players mainly focus on Brussels and European institutions. The European Correspondent aims to change that. We cover the whole of Europe and write for a community of citizens who want to look beyond their own national borders. Without European journalism, there is no European civil society.
