A song for unity and peace
14 July 2023
Over 40 thousand Latvians gathered in Rīga over a ten-day period to participate in the XXVII Nationwide Latvian Song and XVII Dance Festival. The combined festivals, which revolve around folk songs and original compositions inspired by folk songs, is one of the largest amateur choral and dancing events in the world. Organisers reported that over half a million people attended the events throughout the week.

This year, the festival also had an international impact, with sixteen thousand people singing the national anthem of Ukraine as a symbol of unity. |
Welcome to The European Correspondent
Europe lacks true European media: in Germany alone, there are more media devoted exclusively to football than news outlets specialising on Europe. The established players mainly focus on Brussels and European institutions. The European Correspondent aims to change that. We cover the whole of Europe and write for a community of citizens who want to look beyond their own national borders. Without European journalism, there is no European civil society.
