The European Correspondent is looking for:

Economics & finance editor (eight days/month)

About the role

As economics & finance editor, you’ll lead our coverage on the forces shaping Europe’s economy – from inflation and industrial policy to inequality and the green transition. You’ll be part of a Europe-wide editorial team and help shape how we tell Europe's stories that matter.

What you'll be doing

  • Set and refine our editorial direction on economics and finance topics.

  • Write two original stories per month – from reported features to sharp explainers to opinion pieces.

  • Commission and collaborate on pieces with correspondents across Europe.

  • Help develop accessible, engaging coverage of often complex economics topics, driven by a desire to explain how to build an economy that works for all, not just few.

  • Track key economic debates across the EU, eurozone, and beyond.

  • Collaborate with our other desk editors to connect stories across beats.

  • Collaborate with the editor-in-chief to plan medium- and long-term coverage of defence topics

What we're looking for

  • You understand European economic policy, fiscal debates, and market dynamics, and know how to break it down to make it comprehensible to citizens.

  • You have experience in editing or assigning stories — you know how to shape ideas into publishable journalism.

  • You know how to spot where European economic stories connect with everyday life.

  • You're naturally curious about what connects and divides people across Europe.

  • You have excellent English skills; additional European languages are a plus.

  • You have a collaborative mindset – we’re building something together.

  • You take ownership of your work and thrive when given responsibility – we’re looking for people who want to help shape our journalism and organisation.

  • You're a registered freelancer in a European Union country.

What we offer

  • Payment range: €960-€1440, depending on where you live

  • Flexible, remote-first work culture based on trust and outcomes.

  • A say in shaping an independent media start-up from the ground up.

  • As we're fast-growing, much dev

  • Access to a growing European network of journalists and content creators

  • A mission-driven team that values openness and experimentation

  • Location: if you're in Brussels, join us in our office – or work fully remotely from elsewhere

  • Starting date: 1 August 2025
