Manifesto

In the 21st century, Europe must learn to be a continent. Histories and destinies are interweaving, and power is renegotiated. We need to look beyond national borders to understand the challenges of our time. While the rich and powerful are already organised internationally, civil society is not yet.

European journalism is crucial for European civil society. As a pillar of democracy, independent reporting must provide facts and perspectives. European developments influence local happenings. In turn, local occurrences transpire into European decisions. In the fates and coincidences, the flashes of inspiration and mistakes, and the fortunes and failures of the people of Europe, we look for the stories that affect us all. Together, these stories constitute a European understanding.

Doing journalism means taking responsibility for the public. We are aware of our biases and strive not for artificial objectivity but fairness. We do not focus on sensation but on context and classification. Journalism needs empathy – towards the story and those who experience it. Moreover, it needs readers willing to take a chance on an experiment. We develop European journalism side by side with you. Are you with us?

The plan

European journalism has not really been done before. Everything we do, therefore, is an experiment: how can we report from a genuinely European perspective? Which stories are worth your time? In November 2022, we launched our daily newsletter, covering the most important developments in Europe. From Lisbon to Kyiv, from Tbilisi to Reykjavik – our correspondents summarise the essential news in their countries and recommend links to dive deeper into the events and ideas shaping our continent.

But this is only the beginning. In the coming months, we want to release big investigations into the issues that move Europe. We want to research and narrate, contextualise and uncover. And provide you with the facts and interconnections you need for your considerations and decisions. In the long run, consuming European journalism, in addition to local and national media, should become the new norm!
